No: There have been NO reported cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome(HPS) in N.J. Most cases of HPS are acquired indoors from the stirring up of dust contaminated with mouse droppings or saliva. It is much less likely to be acquired from the situation you describe.

Probably OK: See www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/surveillance/state-of-exposure.html; you've a relatively low risk of developing a HV infection. The virus is killed by sunlight. That said, the dead mouse could host some other infectious disease. Wearing nitrile gloves & face mask, disinfect sneakers & hat w/hot water, detergent, colorsafe bleach, & hot dryer. If shoes leather, spray thoroughly w/household disinfectant.

It is unlikely.: Human infections of hantaviruses have almost entirely been linked to human contact with rodent excrement. It is unlikely you have contracted disease. It is always imperative to be extra cautious around rodents and to perform due diligence with cleanliness and hygiene. If you are concerned or develop symptoms it may be in your best interest to seek professional healthcare in person.
