Depends: ..On region you are traveling. Different areas may have resistant malaria; which preventative malaria medication you should take will vary. Also, you will be offered choice based on activity, potential side effects, risk profile, length of stay, sun exposure, stomach sensitivity, personal medical history, even medication costs. Possible: If you are going to an endemic area, you can have your doctor prescribe prophylactic medication and start taking it before you go there, keep taking it while you are there and one week more after returning from there, you should wear long sleeves , mosquito repellent, use mosquito net over your bed when you go to sleep, avoid swampy area, standing waters ( more info in cdc wedsite).

DEET & Picardin: Effective mosquito control limits the possiblilty of malaria. Of course, if you are in an area with malria you will need to add medication to prevent malaria too. Safe & effective: 30%deet, preferably in the ultra frormulation adn 20% picardin are proven effective. You can make your clothes insect repellent too by washing in permthrin. Other unproven insect repellents are not recommended.

A 21-year-old female asked:
Tomorrow I Start taking Mozibite for maleria prevention, however I have been struck down with a cold, can I take any medication or will it effect the maleria tablets?

Dr. Stuart Hickerson answered

Reaction: Typical cold product is going to have either oxymetazoline, pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine. A common medicine for maleria prevention is Malerone. If Mozibite is a brand name for this there would be no interactions between the medications. However, when you go to get your medication double check with the pharmacist.
