It depends...: Depends on if underlying disease (such as coronary artery disease) is present and other factors such as what the underlying cause is. Younger people are more resilient to rapid heart rate. A simple formula, 220 minus age, can generally predict maximum heart rate before decompensation occurs. If symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath, or passing out are present, these would be emergencies.
