Breakthrough bleed: Breakthrough bleeding is the most common side effect of oral contraceptives. Its occurrence does not indicate a decrease in efficacy, but reflects tissue breakdown as the endometrium adjusts to a new thin state in which it is fragile and atrophic. Breakthrough bleeding is more of a problem with lower doses of estrogen because estrogen stabilizes the endometrium.
