Likely viral: There are some viral illnesses that can do this such as hand, foot and mouth disease, herpangina etc. These are often treated with a mixture of liquid medications (often called magic mouthwash or something similar) to relieve symptoms until your body kicks the virus. Strep throat can cause a "strawberry tongue" but usually not painful. Acid reflux is another, less likely, possibility.
