Ortho Sports Doc: At the age of 18, you should not have any swelling. The swelling can be a sign of many things, especially a meniscal tear. The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that sits between the bones in the knee. It acts like a shock on a car. When it tears, it can cause a lot of swelling and sharp pain. It can also cause locking and catching. I would see an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialist.
