Strep: How do you know you have Strep? It is diagnosed by a throat culture or rapid throat swab. If it's just sore and red the most common cause is a viral infection. If you also have a fever and white pus on your tonsils then strep is possible. If not , warm salt water gargles, plenty of oral fluids, rest , and over the counter Tylenol (acetaminophen) for throat pain can help. Lasts 5-7 days generally if viral.
