With EIA testing...: EIA = enzyme immunoassay. With EIA, the number isn't a quanity but a ratio, the strength of reaction in the patient's specimen compared with a control reagent. It has to do with the chemistry of the test, not the amount of HBsAg in blood. The identical specimen tested 10 times can give 10 different numbers. Any result below the cut-off is totally negative, indicating zero HBsAg in the blood.
