It depends of course: Simplest view is lateral neck x-ray which actually shows a lot of information. For more in-depth evaluation, oblique views show foramina where nerve roots exit. Flexion extension views show instability. For the most amount of information without radiation, a cervical MRI shows the most, but is very expensive and should be reserved for difficult cases.
