A member asked:

Got my vaccine cervarix though i have hpv-16. will it ever work to protect me from cancer? was getting the 3 shots a waste of time & money? or not?!

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not known. No. Not.: Cervarix vaccine helps protect against catching HPV strains 16 and 18. If a person already caught HPV 16, it is not known if the vaccine can decrease one's chance of cancer from HPV 16 (for now, presume it does not help). However, the vaccine will help prevent getting HPV 18, which causes about 20% of cervical cancers. Thus, getting the vaccine is still a good thing to do.
