Flank pain: Studies show that the determination of the cause of flank pain depends on the acuity, severity, duration, & character of that pain, in addition to associated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or fever. Distention of the structures of the urinary system from a stone causes flank pain. However, the differential diagnosis is large and includes gastrointestinal maladies & referred chest pain.
