Like camping : In a disaster, one needs to improvise. If you were camping, you would use something to dig a small trench, evacuate into it, and cover it with dirt. Do it away from your water source and not near where you are having to live or eat. Use whatever is available for hygiene, and be sure to try to wash your hands thoroughly, downstream from where you will be, if that is your water source also.

Country Folk ?: Are you implying that those who live in suburban areas have special techniques to defecate and urinate outdoors? For anyone looking for advice, I'm confident that when nature calls you'll find a way to "poop and pee" without soiling yourself or putting yourself in harm's way.

Important Question: In a disaster, lack of public sanitation can kill more people than the disaster itself. People should urinate at least 200 ft from water sources (streams etc) and in a location that isn't going to drain towards the nearest water source! If pooping, ideally dig a hole 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 ft from water source and living areas. In the desert the hole can be shallower (2-6 inches).
