Increase metabolism: Fever is a created by the increase in metabolism used to fight infection. The increase drives up the heart rate (more blood carrying immune factors &white cells around), increases respiratory rate (adding more oxygen to the effort). Germs whether virus or bacteria don't generally reproduce as fast when the body gets hot. This response probably developed over time as those capable of fever did better.
