Probably normal...: Veins carry low oxygen blood back to the heart and are darker in color than oxygen-rich blood. Shallow vessels are more obvious in color. A large superficial pair of tongue veins (ranine veins) are quite obvious on exam (see picture). Enlarged varicose veins at base of the tongue have been reported in some cases of liver disease. If these are new, simple exam and liver labs may be in order.
