Many suggestions: Our eyes were not designed to focus on near objects for hours at a time without breaks. It's important to take at least 20 seconds every 10-20 minutes to focus on distant objects- you can also massage around your eyes, breathe deeply and move them in a circle. See http://www.allaboutvision.com/cvs/irritated.htm for more suggestions related to monitor settings, work station etc. Discuss with boss!

I feel your pain: As a radiologist for 30 yrs, I too was glued to a monitor. Eye strain can be partly addressed by careful control of ambient light and glare. Bigger health issues arise from being sedentary. Many are now using "stand up " desks and find it really reduces whole body fatigue. The best workstations let you adjust the desk for sitting or standing at the touch of a lever.
