Why Both: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) should still protect you. WHY BOTH! It works by two methods. The first is a little less well understood, but an intrauterine device itself changes the uterine environment preventing implantation and pregnancy the Mirena (levonorgestrel) is Levonegestrol (progesterone) coated which hormonally prevents pregnancy. NIKKI is a comb E2/progestin OCP. It hormonally prevents ovulation. follow missed pill rules.
