Periosteitis: The shin is unusual in that it is a bone which is extremely close to the overlying skin, not padded by muscle or fat. Direct injury to the shin may produce inflammation of the outer lining of the bone called the periosteum. Less frequently, this could represent a stress fracture or hematoma. Rarely, an underlying tumor may be brought to light by a trivial injury in the same area
