A member asked:

Can herpes survive on toothpaste, not the tube, the toothpaste itself. so if i share toothpaste but my brush never touches the tube am i free of risk?

Many other risks: Mayo Clinic states: "Shared eating utensils, razors and towels, as well as kissing, may spread HSV-1 [cold sores]. " http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cold-sore/basics/causes/con-20021310 Toothpaste itself is likely more safe than a lot of other things you don't think about. If you are still worried, why not buy your own tube?

No: Although toothpaste is not an hospitable environment for viruses, it takes time for the pathogen to become inactive. Many toothpastes have antibacterial properties, but not antivirul. Best to not share, get your own toothbrush and tube of toothpaste.
