Severity v frequency: Severity of symptoms generally is no different for genital HSV1 or HSV2, either for the initial infection or recurrent outbreaks. However, genital HSV1 can be considered less severe because recurrent outbreaks usually are much less frequent, typically only once a year (often no recurrences at all), whereas HSV2 typically recurs 3-10 times a year. With both types, most recurrent outbreaks are mild.
