See answer: Bloody spinal fluid indicates a subarachnoid hemorrhage or a traumatic spinal tap(bleeding caused by the spinal tap needle>) Yellow cerebrospinal fluid(Xanthochromia) is from the breakdown of hemoglobin and usually occurs within 12 hours of a subarachnoid bleed. It can persist for 2-4 weeks and its presence indicates that any blood in the CSF is from a hemorrhage and not a traumatic tap.
