Purple foot why: Most likely your turned it and sprained it and ruptured some veins leading to a bruise . Had you been drunk the night before and don't remember? Had you danced or hiked all day night the day before? If OK would not worry. If worried get x-ray.

Glad it's all better: It's hard to say what exactly happened but you may have displaced a joint and then it spontaneously relocated. This sometimes happens when unsupportive shoes are worn. The most important thing is it went away, but if symptoms persist, please see a foot and ankle specialist right away.
