There is: There is. It's called spirometry or a spirogram. There's a more involved version of the test often referred to as pulmonary function testing or PFTs. This is usually conducted through a primary care provider or a pulmonologist and is not commonly available in an emergency department or urgent care setting.

Asthma is related to bronchospasms of the airways. Anything which irritates the airways can cause asthma symptoms including cough and wheezing but we don't necessarily consider acute inflammatory conditions "asthma"..such as in the case of a post-viral cough. So history as well as exam can be very helpful in assessing the cause of a cough. I would uncommonly order a spirometer exam.
