Iron stores: Ferritin is a measure of iron stores. Low ferritin may be associated with iron-deficiency anemia and low MCV (microcytosis). Ferritin is the best (but not perfect) measure of iron deficiency. Low ferritin without anemia does not benefit from iron replacement -- but does help for frequent blood donors.
