Some things smoking : Can do to you include TOOTH LOSS. ORAL CANCER WHICH CAN LEAD TO BEING PERMANENTLY DISFIGURED OR EVEN DEAD. That being said, it is extremely difficult to quit smoking. So patience is important throughout the process of trying to quit.

Damage!: A 53 year old male smoker has already likely done significant damage to their lungs and vascular system! If you are asking there must be something more that you are very concerned about. See a physician and have a pulmonary function test performed as well as a chest x-ray and EKG. This is important. I wish him well! However don't be surprised if he will not have the tests.
