TYPE I HERPES: Zovirax (acyclovir) ointment 5% is effective for many individuals who suffer from recurrent cold sores. It is best applied when the first signs of a cold sore appear....That itchy, tingly sensation in the lip along with the slightly elevated area where it will eventually break out. Apply very small amounts up to 6-8 times a day until all signs of the lesion disappear. Keep some on hand and begin early.

NOT NECESSARy: Not only do antiviral ointments not speed the healing and resolution of herpes simplex outbreaks, but there is evidence that they may contribute to the development of resistance so that if you then treat with oral Acyclovir salts it may not respond as well. What the ointments do positively is to reduce viral shedding and make it more difficult to transmit to others.
