Yes: I have found melatonin to be safe and (somewhat) effective as an OTC sleep aid for my patients, but many of them report the following issues: (1) due to its short duration of action, some people wake up after about 3-4 hours, and find that the "extended release" melatonin works better; (2) especially with doses higher than 2mg, melatonin can make you feel groggy the next day. Good luck!

Short term use: Melatonin is considered safe for short term use to improve sleep hygiene. You can start with 1 mg and titrate up to 3 mg based on response.
