Colon Cancer Risk: Long term constipation is not a cause of colon cancer. There are many risks for developing colon cancer. The strongest is personal or family history. The western diet is a risk factor. Smoking can increase the risk. Certain intestinal diseases can also increase risk. Constipation can cause diverticulosis which can lead to diverticulitis.

Inlikely: Constipation itself does not lead to colon cancer. That being said the acute development of constipation that doesn't resolve with dietary modification and stool softener a can signify the development of a colon cancer and should always be evaluated by a gastroenterologist.
