Get checked: Hard to know for sure without more background information, but description consistent with irritation of stomach or intestinal lining or possibly problem with gall bladder. If this persists, he should be examined by a physician and a few screening blood tests can be done to begin to identify the problem. Make sure he is not taking aspirin, ibuprofen or other nsaid medications.
