Stimulant prodrug: Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is unique in psychiatry in that it is what is called a prodrug. It is amphetamine attached to lysine, an amino acid. In that form, it is inactive. But, when swallowed, it is metabolized in the both, breaking the bond to release d-amphetamine. Since metabolism controls its release, it tends to start more slowly but it lasts longer than any other oral stimulant. It still is amphetamine.
