Unstable knee: Instability of the knee can be caused by ligament injury from direct or indirect trauma. Such symptoms as popping, locking, catching, clicking, or giving way can be symptoms of ligament injury. Cartilage, bone, tendons and other structures can also become inflamed and result in knee instability and pain. You need a knee exam and possibly X-rays to delineate the cause and treatment.
