Gas pains: The colon takes a 90 degree turn at the upper left quadrant of the abdomen and this area may trap gas(splenic flexure syndrome}. Another cause of fleeting sharp pain in the lower rib cage at the juncture of the ribs and upper abdomen is a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between the two last ribs. Either of these conditions are just nuisance type problems, but see your MD as needed.
