Why do persons take out their wisdom teeth? aside from the pain?

Good question: I am not a dentist, but I remember what my oral surgeon told me when I had my wisdom teeth removed. He said they have a tendency to result in odontogenic infections if left in place. So their extraction is preventative. The infection can spread to the jaw and cause osteomyelitis or enter the bloodstream and cause systemic illness.
