Depends: We risk stratify all symptoms. We put together a puzzle to include age, is blood bright red or not, is it actually in or on the stool or on the tissue or toilet bowl or all. Is it only with a movement, is there pain or protrusion with that movement. Finally, most providers would recommend at least an office rectal exam. It is rare but too many people assume it is not serious and miss a cancer

Several thoughts.: If stools otherwise look normal in color and consistency, then could be hemorrhoids or anal fissure. If accompanied by diarrhea and episodic, could be ulcerative colitis or other inflammatory colitis. If stools are black and tarry, could be stomach ulcer or gastritis. Unfortunately there are several thoughts depending on actual presentation of blood.
