Unlikely diagnosis: Yes, M. furfur is the causative agent of tinea versicolor, but it would be highly unusual to develop this condition resulting in an inner, middle, or external ear infection. What is more likely is incidental seborrheic dermatitis of the ear, for which M. furfur may play an additional pathogenic role.
