Good question: The pathogenesis of kidney stones is not entirely known. One theory explains that calcium oxalate or phosphate stones form when calcium or oxalate supersaturates the urine with the subsequent formation of crystals in the collecting ducts. Another theory suggests that crystals initially form in the renal medullary interstitium with subsequent development of plaques.

Metabolic issue.: Kidney stones are initiated by metabolic derangements in the handling of urinary oxalate, uric acid or calcium, for example. These derangements can be hereditary, and they allow for crystals of these substances to form. These crystals serve as a nidus for stone creation.
