Continue: You can take and cut the one half tablet in half but that is getting small. You can get a 0.5 mg tablet and cut those in half and take them like you are at one half tablet twice a day. Otherwise you could alternate days taking 1/2 tab of 1mg twice one day and just once the next day and then eventually go to once daily. Then would need to change pill to taper further. Hope this helped.

Hard to do: It's hard to split the tablets into more than 2 pieces. Usually what happens is that the split is uneven and you'll get a bigger dose with some pieces and a smaller dose with the others. Would be easier to continue weaning off with a 0.5mg tablet at this point.

Xanax (alprazolam) taper: EricF ~ this all hinges on how long you have been taking xanax (alprazolam) 2mg and why. If it has been a short period and for minor social anxiety, then you can taper very fast, if at all. So the 1mg can immed go to 0.5mg and then 5-7 days later stop. The longer you have been on it the more fastidious the taper. From what you say I think you can taper quickly, but always discuss with treating physician

Drug tapering: You can half the 1 mg first then half it again will give you 0.25 mg, which you can sue for few days to weeks, then get the prescription for 0.5 mg, you can divide also if you still need it.

Gradually: If you have been on Xanax (alprazolam) for a long time your are correct in slowly tapering it. Xanax (alprazolam) does come in 1/2 mg tablets as well as 1/4 mg tablets. If you have a pill cutter you can cut these pills in half. You can also consider taking them as needed but not more than once or twice /day and the working your way down to 1-2 times per week. You doctor may be able to teach you so relaxation techniques.

Smaller dosage : Ask you doctor to prescribe you a smaller dosage of Xanax (alprazolam) (0.5 mg or 0.25 mg) and go down by tapering off gradually.
