A member asked:

Is it healthy for a 13 year old boy to go to the gym every alternate day to lift dumbells 6-8kg n a 10kg(when i'm stressed),will this inhibit growth?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Must work up to it: It's not a great idea just to start at that high of a weight. I'd encourage him to start about half that weight and gradually work up over 1-2 months. You have to take weight lifting slow at this age so as to not fracture any growth plates as growth is rapid and this puts them at greater risk for these type of fractures. It will in NO WAY inhibit growth, but take it slow!
