You may have: costochondritis, or inflammation of the cartilage connecting the rib(s) to the sternum (breastbone). Or some inflamed intercostal muscles that crack when you stretch them. Costochondral: inflammation. The cartilage that connects the sternum (breastbone) to your ribs is called the costochondral cartilage. When you stretch you pull on it, sometimes too much, the joints move, you hear a noise. The overuse can sometimes result in pain/tenderness to touch. I would not stretch so forcefully/expansively! Heavy weight lifting might also contribute. Moderation, friend. Good wishes:)

Costochodritis: an inflammation where the rib joins the sternum. Heat to the area and an anti-inflammatory should help. If not better see your doctor.
