Ligament or tendon: strain or inflammation. If relieved with massage, most likely a soft tissue inflammation.

Use or disuse: Hi Barbara 453 Knee pain can be overuse or disuse. Does it come on when walking or running? Where is it exactly? Sharp or dull? Most common causes are strains of the support connective tissue (collateral ligaments), irritation of a tendon bursa, or pinching of a cartilage. Ask your PCP or the person they refer you to. Good luck.
