Varies : There are multiple potential causes, primarily divided into soft tissue verse bone causes. Examples of soft tissue problems would be a tendonitis of the anterior tibialis muscle. From a bone perspective, a tarsal coalition or a accessory bone in that area can cause symptoms. A detailed exam and appropriate studies will usually determine the cause.
