Perhaps: First the cause of the pain would have to be determined. If infected tooth, probably. If fractured tooth root, probably not. Etc. You need to be examined to determine the source of your pain and then the appropriate treatment. The sooner this is addressed, the less complex (expensive) the "fix." Please call Dentist now.

Sounds likely: Acute pain as you describe often indicates nerve necrosis and root canal treatment is indicated if all else is good ( bone level, amount of tooth remaining, occlusion, gum tissue level and health) .
