Ambien (zolpidem) CR: You can take Ambien CR which has little longer half life or just take Lunesta (eszopiclone) before sleep. These two hypnotics are quite useful for sleep maintainance Insomnia. Then there are techniques that a Sleep specialist can teach you like Stimulus control therapy and Sleep Restriction. These in the long run are more efficacious.

Insomnia: I understand your desire to have good sleep. Lack of effectiveness of Ambien indicates that sleep problem is due to stress. At age 49, many people go through stresses of marriage, separation, divorce, parenting, children leaving home and finances causing sleep problem. Using Lunesta (eszopiclone) with Ambien may cause difficulty concentrating, impairment in thinking and judgment. See a Psychiatrist for Therapy

Generally yes: cannot say in your particular case AND ambien has an effective duration of about 3 to 4 hr. Often people wake up because it ain't there. Consequently, interactions with a drug that ain't even there, are not likely to be serious. Strongly consider SLEEP HYGIENE resources on this site.
