For most: Most women do have some degree of crampy and/or sharp pain during their period. This is called dysmenorrhea. If it starts within the first couple of periods you have it is primary dysmenorrhea and if it starts later, it is secondary. However, if this is new onset pain and lasts beyond your period, see you gyn to confirm it isn't something else.
