OCP: You should take the 7 day "free" pills before starting the 2nd pack of pills because of how the hormones are dosed in each week of the pack. Spotting is normal during the first month of starting an OCP, and it can take up to 3 months for your body to adjust. If bleed becomes more than spotting or the spotting doesn't resolve, you should see your OB/GYN to re-evaluate the pill you are taking.
