Cold preparations: Over the counter cold medicines do not reduce symptoms enough to risk the side effects including changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Try humidifier, lots ofh liquids (chicken soup!) and ice pops. And see your doctor if he is very uncomfortable. Best of luck and get well soon!

I woudn't: If you are looking to do something that helps ask the kid what he needs to feel comfortable.Provide him with access to plenty of fluids & simple nutritious snacks. Simple pain meds would help the headache.Although "cold" preparations were once prescribed frequently to kids, studies more than a decade ago show they have no value under age 12, if then.
