Extracellular fluid: potassium is what you are trying to replace. Most of total body potassium is intracellular. Extracellular fluid (including blood volume) represents only 40% of the total body weight. Therefore 0.4X body weight= extracellular fluid volume and should be used in calculating K+ replacement dosage. Using total body weight would cause over-replacement. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!
