Phentermine...: ...shares some characteristics with its parent compound--the more dangerous and addicting drug amphetamine. Its primary action results in the releasing of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (and to a lesser extent serotonin, dopamine and monoamines). This seems to reduce the perception of hunger which originates in the hypothalamus. Outside the brain, stored fat is broken down from fat cells.
