Ribs are connected t: the breast bone by small joints. Inflammation of these joints is called costochondritis. The nerve that runs below the rib can become irritated which can cause pain that wraps around the entire rib. Shingles can also cause this type of pain so be on the look out for a rash on your ribcage. Muscles between ribs can be strained. All these conditions can cause painful breathing.
