Labor pains: Hallmark of labor pains is that they come at fixed interval. Time yourself and if they are consistently (say) 20 or 30 min apart--- they are labor pains.

Braxton Hicks: The off and on abdominal pains are Braxton Hicks contractions that are the rehearsal for the real labor when the pains will be timed at increasingly shorter intervals. When those intervals are timed x 5 minutes or less, and you no longer can walk talk laugh or breath, it is time to call your OB MD for labor instructions.
