Wrong and wrong: The large majority of HPV infections are cleared by the immune system within a few months, do not cause any health problem, and can no longer be transmitted to partners. Viral DNA may persist, but it usually does not reactivate or cause future problems and cannot be transmitted. It is normal to get HPV, happens to everyone. Get the vaccine to reduce risk of important medical effects.

HPV can clear: Anogenital HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Most infections are subclinical and clear spontaneously within 2 years. Persistent infection with high-risk types of HPV is associated with development of cervical cancer, with more than 12 000 new cases and 4000 deaths attributed to HPV annually in the United States.
