Wrong and wrong: The large majority of HPV infections are cleared by the immune system within a few months, do not cause any health problem, and can no longer be transmitted to partners. HPV can clear: Anogenital HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Most infections are subclinical and clear spontaneously within 2 years. Persistent infection with high-risk types of HPV is associated with development of cervical cancer, with more than 12 000 new cases and 4000 deaths attributed to HPV annually in the United States.
